The song “El Elegido” has been interpreted to be about many historical characters, such as Che Guevara, Sandino or even Silvio himself; however, the song seems to be about Abel Santamaria. When the Nueva Trova was initiating Silvio Rodriguez and other singer-song writers used to visit Haydee Santamaria; she had been a part in Fidel Castro’s guerrilla movement. From all the stories of brave guerrilleros that she told them, the story of Abel Santamaria (her brother) really stuck to Silvio. When Fulgencio Batista rose to power in Cuba as a result of a coup d'Etat; the house of the Santamaria siblings became the centre of operation of the resistance. Abel Santamaria planned next to Fidel Castro the assault to the Cuartel de Moncada. During this assault Abel next to Fidel and Raul Castro leaded one of the three groups in the operation. Abel was captured during this operation with many other guerrilleors; they were all savagely tortured and then murdered. Abel refused to reveal the name of the leader of the movement and to say that he had been bribed to participate in the assault, which was a lie. Because of this Silvio decided to write a song to honor his bravery, loyalty and his death; this song is “El Elegido.”
