Date Rape Lyrics

[Chorus]
"Come on, babe, it's your lucky day
Shut your mouth, we're gonna do it my way
Come on, baby, don't be afraid
If it wasn't for date rape, I'd never get laid"

[Solo]

[Verse 2]
He finished up and he started the car
He turned around and drove back to the bar
He said, "Now, baby, don't be sad
In my opinion, you weren't half-bad"

She picked up a rock, threw it at the car
Hit him in the head, now he's got a big scar
Come on, party people, won't you listen to me?
Date rape stylee

The next day, she went to her drawer
Looked up her local attorney at law
Went to the phone and filed a police report
And then she took the guy's ass to court
Well, the day he stood in front of the judge
He screamed, "She lies, that little slut!"
The judge knew he was full of shit
And he gave him twenty-five years
And now his heart is filled with tears
One night in jail, it was getting late
He was butt-raped by a large inmate, and he screamed
But the guards paid no attention to his cries

Genius Annotation

18th song on Sublime’s 40oz. To Freedom, a cheery tune about forced sex and getting punished for it.

In a 1995 interview with Axis Magazine, Bradley Nowell explained his influence for the song:

“I’ve never raped anyone as far as I can remember. We were at a party a long time ago and we were all talking about how bad date rape was. This guy was like, ‘Date rape isn’t so bad- if it wasn’t for date rape, I’d never get laid.’ Everyone at the party was bummed out about it, but I was cracking up and I wrote a funny song about it.”

The song seems heavily influenced by at least a few other songs:

  • “Comin' Home Baby” by jazz musician Herbie Mann. Originally released in 1961.

The song also originally contained a cover of Rawhide, a Western song written by Ned Washington lyrics and composed by Dimitri Tiomkin in 1958. The most famous version of the song is arguably its cover performed in the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers”.

Sadly, Sublime was unable to legally include the cover on the official version of the album 40oz. To Freedom.
