Genius Annotation

“Charlie Boy” details the life of lead singer Wesley Schultz’s uncle, Charles Schultz, who was killed in the Vietnam War.

Charles, or Charlie, was born in 1944 and was the first born of four sons, one of which was Wesley’s father. The family lived in Metuchen, NJ. Charlie identified with the Democrat ideology of the time and was a supporter of John F. Kennedy, so he believed in Kennedy’s famous plea from his Inaugural Address in 1961:

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.

He felt his country needed him, and in his early twenties he joined the United States Marine Corps and was deployed to Vietnam where he was killed in action.
