Genius Annotation

“The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” is a melancholy track that describes the final days of songwriter Ben Gibbard’s long-distance relationship with fellow musician Allisyn Levy. The events recounted in “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” likely occurred close to those narrated by Gibbard in an interview with Exclaim:

At the time [October 2001], I’d been living with my girlfriend at home, and she had just moved to DC. We broke up, and it had been because of the amount of time I was spending in the band.
