This is the fourth track on Tricky’s debut album, Maxinquaye. Having been a member of British Trip-Hop outfit, Massive Attack, the song was written among Tricky and the other respective band members; the lyrics were used for this song, as well as Massive Attack’s track Eurochild, on their second album, Protection, which was the final Massive Attack album that featured Tricky as an original band member in 1994. Hell Is Round the Corner features vocals from then-girlfriend & frequent collaborator, Martina Topley-Bird who recorded numerous records along with Tricky. The song was also featured on a Tricky, Martina Bird-Topley & American Hip-Hop group Gravediggaz EP entitled The Hell EP, which also contained a “Hell & Water” remix of the track.

The song samples “Ike’s Rap II” by Isaac Hayes, used by Portishead’s “Glory Box” a year prior.
