Wearing My Rolex Lyrics

[Chorus: Wiley]
What would we do?
Usually drink, usually dance, usually bubble
All I want to do is tell you I love you
That's when I start promising the world
To a brand new girl I don't even know yet
Next thing she's wearing my Rolex
What would we do?
Usually drink, usually dance, usually bubble
All I want to do is tell you I love you
All I want to do is tell you I love you

[Verse 1: Wiley]
That's when I start promising the world
To a brand new girl I don't even know yet
Next thing she's wearing my Rolex
Too much champs don't know where my phone is
Here's my number, she already knows it
This chapter's a lot, better close it
Just the look in her eye was so evil
Wiley's a party guy and she knows it

[Chorus: Wiley]
What would we do?
Usually drink, usually dance, usually bubble
All I want to do is tell you I love you
That's when I start promising the world
To a brand new girl I don't even know yet
Next thing she's wearing my Rolex
What would we do?
Usually drink, usually dance, usually bubble
All I want to do is tell you I love you
All I want to do is tell you I love you
[Verse 2: Wiley]
That's when I start promising the world
To a brand new girl I don't even know yet
Next thing she's wearing my Rolex
What would we do?
What would we do?
All I want to do
Is tell you I love you

That's when I start promising the world
To a brand new girl I don't even know yet
Next thing she's wearing my Rolex
Too much champs don't know where my phone is
Here's my number, she already knows it
This chapter's a lot, better close it
Just the look in her eye was so evil
Wiley's a party guy and she knows it

[Chorus: Wiley]
What would we do?
Usually drink, usually dance, usually bubble
All I want to do is tell you I love you
That's when I start promising the world
To a brand new girl I don't even know yet
Next thing she's wearing my Rolex

Genius Annotation

Wiley’s first commercially successful track despite only clocking in just over 2 minutes. The track was his highest charting, at #2 in the UK Singles chart, until 2012’s Heatwave got the top spot.

Described as “grime-meets-electro” on BBC Radio 1Xtra, this song put Wiley in the eye of the mainstream audience.

The hook uses a sample of DSK’s “What Would We Do”.

Why didn't Wiley show up for the music video?
Genius Answer

Wiley didn’t turn up to the video shoot. Initially, this was because he was stabbed two days prior to shooting the video, resulting in the scar he has on his face. The video was delayed and replanned. Wiley visited the shoot and declared it was a “white man’s vision” and left.

Initially it was reported by The Sun that Wiley didn’t turn up for the video shoot because he was scared of foxes (girls dressed as foxes feature in the music video), however this was comically rejected as false by Wiley in a radio interview in 2008:

There’s no truth in that story, none. I would stand outside at night, if there was foxes, I would feed them chicken bones. That’s silly for them to say that. Wiley’s not scared of no animals fam, I could be in the desert with lions and tigers fam. That is what people don’t understand. Why would I be scared of animals?

What did Wiley say about "Wearing My Rolex"?
Genius Answer

I think it’s electro, it’s electro, it’s dance music basically. And I think that, the sample in it, from old school, helped it to… to sort of, be today what it is, dance music thing. So, I put a grime element to it.

Everyone says “ah, this tune’s gonna pave the way for grime”. It’s not, because it’s not grime, on its own is it? But what it will do is pave the way for…. open minded people who…. would do that sorta music, or any kind of music, to try and get through the door. That is what it will do.

And, obviously my album, which is gonna come out next, after this, “Wearing My Rolex”, is gonna be grime. I call it “commercial grime” now. ‘Cause I..I..I don’t want it to be grime, I try and brighten it out but with chords and bridges, and try and make it proper music instead of, just a beat, 140 BPM. So that’s…. what, is gonna be next. I hope that grime comes forward, but I know it’s gonna take time. It ain’t gonna just blow tomorrow, it’s not.

“A lot of the time a lot of ideas come from having fun, laughing and joking. I said to Wiley why did you make “Wearing My Rolex” and he said “y’know, sometimes you’re in a club and you’re talking to a girl and you’re so drunk that she might say ‘oh let me wear your rolex’ and said “yeah and you give it to her and she goes to the bar and tries to show it off to the bartender and she starts dancing with it and stuff,” and he was like “yeah, the Rolex sweep” and that was it. We just started dancing.”
