This song makes you feel loss, a loss of a love that you’ve never had yourself, one that was felt by one of the lyricists, and one that makes you feel the longing for a youth that you never experienced, one of peace and of a feeling of genuine love. If you never felt it, you wish that you had, and if you have, you long for it back.

The song uses islands as a metaphor for some sort of stability that the lyricist felt in this love, stability of love that they felt. They long for the stability of being in love with this person that they felt. All the while they speak about the way that they never really felt this stability, later in the song saying that “I could never hold you…”, suggesting that they never actually got to experience the love that they longed for.
