If you’ve ever seen a cover to a rap album from the 90s – esp. if it was released on Cash Money or No Limit – you’ve seen the work of Pen & Pixel Graphics.
Their style was incredibly distinct – stretched out, glossy looking typography, luxury items placed haphazardly, the features plastered over the actual art, and usually no real sense of coherency.
At the time, Cash Money was a fully independent record label, and Southern hip-hop was still fighting for recognition. Nevertheless, with no major label deal, no major play on radio or MTV, the album sold 100,000 copies.
