Detox

Dr. Dre

About “Detox”

Detox is Dr. Dre’s fourth studio album, and has been in the making for over twenty years…

The earliest version we know of Detox is referred to as The Chronic III, the scrapped finale to The Chronic trilogy. This version was scrapped for unknown reasons.

Five years later, Dre resumed his work on it, on what’s now known as the 2010 version. The hype behind the album was surreal, with the album being known for its insane collaborations. Many of these big-collaboration songs such as “‘My Syllables” and “My Prescription” leaked online, which ended up frustrating Dre to the point where he scrapped the project a second time.

After taking some time off, Dre started to roll out the album in 2011. This was the time people had the most hope for it because Dre was actually releasing music, with “I Need A Doctor” and “Kush” being it’s lead singles. Dre was supposed to release the track “Under Pressure” as it’s third single, but the track leaked online and once again caused Dre to scrap everything and instead start working on his 2015 studio album, “Compton”.

After the project being scrapped three times, Dre’s Detox is seen as an absolute myth. Especially considering Dre had now dropped a different body of work, there were zero hopes from fans for the album ever releasing.

Dre took a four-year break from public appearances and was first spotted making music again in a tweet by Kanye West, announcing a remix album he and Dre were working on for his JESUS IS KING. With no surprise to fans, this project also was scrapped.

The return for Detox specifically came in January of 2021 after producer Dem Jointz posted a photo to Instagram with the hashtag #Detox21. Although the album would end up not releasing in 2021, this is what’s seen as the beginning to the rollout 2020s version of Detox.

Following this, the first actual music we got from Dre again was a collection of six tracks titled The Contract which were recorded and released for the video game Grand Theft Auto V. Following this, Dre had an epic role in the 2022 Super Bowl Half-Time Show in February of 2022 where he, along with other artists he brought up over the years, performed their biggest hits. It was rumoured Dre would be making an official Detox announcement during the show, however this never happened.

Considering there was no announcement, #Detox21 wasn’t valid in 2022 anymore, and Dre’s tendency of scrapping projects, fans already started to lose hope again. That was until Snoop Dogg accidentally posted a picture with a whiteboard behind him and Dre in the studio that showed a list of twelve tracks with the title Detox – Dr. Dre above it. This was the confirmation that Detox was still in the works.

It is currently unknown when the project is set for release. It is set to include features from Snoop Dogg, 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, Busta Rhymes, Anderson .Paak and more.
