Wuthering Heights

Emily Brontë

About “Wuthering Heights”

The first and only novel by English writer Emily Brontë, one of the three famous Brontë sisters (along with Charlotte and Anne). Wuthering Heights was published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell; Emily died of tuberculosis at age 30 the following year.

Wuthering Heights is a story of obsession and revenge which spreads over two generations of the Earnshaw and Linton families after Mr Earnshaw adopts a foundling named Heathcliff. The story is told through a complex structure of nested unreliable narrators and the action shocked its original readers – and can still shock – for its violence and lack of clear moral standpoint. The evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland and the poetic grandeur of vision continue to influence and combine to make the novel a masterpiece of English literature. It divides critics as to whether Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre is the superior work.
