About “The Dutchess”

The Dutchess is the debut studio album by Fergie released in 2006. The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 142,000. For the next year, the album would be apparent within about the top 20 on the chart before reaching a new peak of #2. It would go on to spend nearly two years on the chart and sell nearly 4,000,000 copies in the US alone. Since its release, the album has sold over 8,000,000 copies worldwide and was one of the best-selling albums of 2006 and 2007.

Six singles were released from The Dutchess. “London Bridge” and “Fergalicious” preceded the release of the album with “Glamorous”, “Clumsy”, “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, and “Finally” following. “London Bridge”, “Glamorous”, and “Big Girls Don’t Cry” would all reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, “Fergalicious” #2, and “Clumsy” #5. Fergie became the first female artist to have three #1 singles from one album since Christina Aguilera did so eight years prior. All five singles would also go on to sell at least two-million copies each in the US, making Fergie the first artist to have five singles from one album all achieve multiplatinum certification; a record she held until Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream. “Finally” failed to meet the success of its predecessors and only charted at #101.

The Dutchess was re-released in 2008 with four additional tracks: “Labels or Love” from The Sex and the City film soundtrack, “Party People” with Nelly, “Barracuda” a Heart cover, and a remix of “Clumsy” featuring Soulja Boy. The four new tracks were also featured solely on the EP The Dutchess: The Deluxe EP released at the same time. The EP debuted at #46 on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 11,000.

“The Dutchess” Q&A

  • What have the artists said about the album?

Every song has its own character. They use different pieces of my voice and that’s what I want to express, ‘cause it’s fun. It makes the album less boring for me and hopefully for others as well."

  • How many editions of the album exist?

There are three complete editions of the album:

  • What is the meaning behind the album title?

“The Dutchess” is a play on words from the Duchess of York, but it’s not to be taken literally [laughs]. If you notice, on the album cover it says “Fergie as the Dutchess” because I wanted each song to be a movie poster. But because “London Bridge” did so well so fast, we had to get everything done so only half the songs on the album have movie poster themes. For example, for “Fergalicious” I’m holding a lollipop; it’s pretty campy and cute. The pictures were all shot by Ellen von Unwerth in Paris so a lot of them are very Brigitte Bardot-esque.
