Beam Me Up Scotty

Nicki Minaj

About “Beam Me Up Scotty”

The mixtape that helped turn Nicki into a household name. Hosted by DJ Holiday, the guest roster is staggering for an artist who had yet to sign a deal or release her debut. Bobby V, Busta Rhymes, Drake, Gucci Mane and Lil Wayne, and more appear on the mixtape. However, it should be noted that various songs on the mixtape were actually songs featuring Nicki that were repurposed for this mixtape’s tracklist, including all the songs with Gucci Mane and a few others.

The mixtape was Lil Wayne’s first project with the rapper, and he is seen as having “mentored” the tape and release. He certainly helped the single “I Get Crazy” gain traction, and it peaked at number 20 on the US Hot Rap Songs chart in 2009. More importantly, it began to generate press for the rapper.

The tape also granted her access to a much large audience thanks to MTV during their Mixtape Daily segment.

On May 14, 2021, to celebrate the mixtape’s 12th anniversary, the mixtape was re-released on all streaming services. The version of the mixtape uploaded to streaming services included the DJ tags by DJ Holiday and Trap-a-holics. The streaming version of the mixtape notably excluded “Mind on My Money (Remix),” “Handstand,” “Five-O,” and “Feel Free (Remix)” from its tracklist, as those songs have other people as their official lead artists. The streaming version of the mixtape also included three new songs at the beginning and two songs which were previously only available on Nicki’s SoundCloud account and never officially on any streaming services.
