About “Good Girl Gone Bad”

Good Girl Gone Bad is the third studio album by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna, released on May 31, 2007.

Chart-wise, it was very successful, featuring the number one single “Umbrella”, the top tens “Hate That I Love You” and “Don’t Stop The Music”, and the top twenties “Rehab” and “Shut Up And Drive.” Later, the rerelease of the album added two more number ones: “Disturbia” and “Take A Bow.”

The album itself debuted and peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200, blocked from the top spot by T-Pain’s Epiphany. This became her highest charting album until her fifth and sixth albums Unapologetic and ANTi both hit #1.

It’s a dance-pop, pop and R&B album with 1980s music influences. Described as a turning point in Rihanna’s career, it represents a departure from the Caribbean sound of her previous releases. Apart from the sound, she also endorsed a new image for the release, going from an innocent girl to an edgier and more sexual look.

Rihanna talked about the title in an interview with MTV:

They just put me in the studio and I started recording and recording, and it showed the direction of who I became as an artist. We figured Good Girl Gone Bad was the perfect title because it showed people I’m my own [person] now. Not doing what anyone wants me to do. I’m not the innocent Rihanna anymore. I’m taking a lot more risks and chances. I felt when I cut my hair, it shows people I’m not trying to look or be anybody else. The album is very edgy. We have some urban records, some really pop records.

“Good Girl Gone Bad” Q&A

  • Is “Good Girl Gone Bad” Rihanna's favorite album?

No, because that was a transition. I don’t know what my favorite album is — I’m sure if I put all my favorite songs together, it would be a really sick album. Maybe I should do that one day.

Also, according to Songfacts, she also told Men’s Fitness magazine:

The title of the album represents my liberation. Being able to break out of the innocent image I was forced into. Now I’m just being me. I’m a little more rebellious. On the record you hear that I have a lot more attitude. So it matches the new sound, the new image, the new haircut… the new everything.
