Alopecia

Alopecia is the second studio album by the band WHY?, originally released on the Anticon record label. This album marks the first album properly recorded by the full group in a studio.

The career-defining album for the group was written in Oakland, California, home of the Anticon label/collective, and features contributions from label-mates Doseone and Odd Nosdam who along with frontman Yoni Wolf, made up the avant-rap trio cLOUDDEAD.

The name of the record originated from a hole Yoni found in his beard which rapper Slug from Atmosphere identified as alopecia, a medical term for sudden hair loss. Yoni found the name fitting for the record, as the album expressed feelings of anger, anxiety, and inner turmoil, which are legitimate causes of alopecia.

Due to the record’s cultural impact, the album was re-issued on Joyful Noise Recordings in 2018.
