After being Kidnapped by Hades she was tricked by being given a kernel of a pomegranate to eat. She ate four SEEDS, which correspond to the dry summer months in Greece.
It was a rule of the Fates that whoever consumed food or drink in the Underworld was doomed to spend eternity there.
Persephone was released by Hermes, who had been sent to retrieve her, but she was obliged to spend four months of a year in the underworld, and the remaining two thirds with the gods above.
Modern civilization is often attributed to ancient Greece.
