In the Old Testament, the philosophy of justice is “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth,” which means that all violent crimes should be returned with equally violent acts.
Another phrase is “An eye for an eye and the whole world goes blind,” which is the sentiment the Flobots want to evoke here
Actually, the phrase “an eye for an eye” originated long before the Old Testament. It’s actually a reference to Hammurabi’s Code, which is a set of laws discovered on stone tablets dating back to the early to mid 18th century BCE (1792-1750 BCE). These laws are some of the oldest known records of societal laws, only predated thus far by tablets found in the ruins of Ebla dating back to about the 24th century BCE.
Hammurabi himself had thought to unify laws as he expanded his territory. Rather than create them all himself, he sent others to go out through the territory and collect a list of local laws that could then be condensed and curated into something that he could apply across his territory. The phrase “an eye for an eye” is a crude summary of the laws he set forth. It seems like a judicial system based on revenge, when that’s hardly the case. He set different punishments for different people, most notably, nobles and the wealthy were often punished much more harshly than the poor. Women also had important rights that weren’t seen in later civilizations. Unfortunately, like with any code of laws, this one had its problems along with its benefits. It often put prices on certain crimes (destroying the eye of a commoner cost one mina of silver), but at the same time provided pardons for things outside of ones control (If someone owes a debt and storms kill their crops, they owe nothing for that year).
