The classic rags to riches story. Meech and the Flatbush Zombies are looking to make as much money as they can and save every possible penny they can in order to move somewhere much better than the ‘hell hole’ they live in now.

Maybe they’ll move to a mansion in Miami to kick it and smoke some bath salts with a fellow zombie

Stepping in poop is always shitty! (Get it?)

But in a deeper context, with this and following lines, Nowell describes the trials of his impoverished party lifestyle and alludes to his own depression before stating it outright (Feeling depressed everyday). Little troubles like a sandy bedsheet, to a depressed person, can be as trying as hours of community service, because they are both evidence of an inability to control one’s life.

Furthermore, one can intepret “pull over, there’s a reason why my soul is unsound” as a reference to being ‘pulled over’ or stopped by the police while driving. In this context, the singer is worried about the police finding what he’s hidden beneath his shoe, or of their suspicions when they smell what he’s been smoking inside the van he drives.

A possible reference to the 1992 L.A. Riots which erupted after the negative reaction of the Rodney King trials. Many people took the street’s of L.A. to riot where looting, stealing, and much vandalism occurred. So this could also be a reference to another song by Sublime, April 29, 1992, which is also about the riots.

On another note, this could simply just be Bradley saying he is a thief in nature and steal’s everything he finds necessary and able to steal.

You’re stupid to fuck around with Lou Dog, who was often considered to be Bradley’s closest friend. So if you were to fuck with Louie, not only would you have to deal with the consequence from Louie himself, but Bradley as well. .

Bradley brags about a few valuable novelties he has such as a VCR and microwave. Oh and don’t forget about the deuce-deuce, which is a slang term for a .22 caliber handgun. And be careful! Bradley won’t think twice to stick that barrel straight down your throat!

Despite Garden Grove not being much of a party city (Especially in the ‘80s and '90s, when it was nicknamed “Garbage Grove”). It seems as if Sublime has traveled to Garden Grove to party and play in the numerous amount of run down dive-bars, so you better be prepared to pay 5 dollars at the door!

Also, it is believed that this is a reference to the Bob Marley song Punky Reggae Party

Garden Grove is a city in southern California which is only a short drive east of the band’s hometown of Long Beach. For another musical reference to Garden Grove, California, see “Home Again Garden Grove”, track #8 on The Mountain GoatsWe Shall All Be Healed.

Lou Dog was the Dalmatian dog that lead singer of Sublime, Bradley Nowell, rescued from a shelter.

Bud Gaugh, former drummer of Sublime, was quoted as saying,

Lou Dog just loved Brad because it was the first time he had ever actually been shown love.

Louie was often allowed to roam around on stage with the band during live shows. Bradley would take Lou everywhere, including trips to Garden Grove, so it only make sense as to why it smells like Lou Dog in the van!

Also, this is not the first time Bradley has mentioned taking Lou Dog to parties.

Bradley Nowell (lead singer of Sublime) could have possibly meant a number of things with this line:

  1. One interpretation of a ‘Badfish’ is considered to be someone who is addicted to heroin. Bradley could be saying that this girl is very addicted to heroin by comparing the size of an ocean fish to a big blue whale. She isn’t just a ‘badfish’ but a ‘badwhale’.

  2. Another common interpretation of a ‘Badfish’ is someone who gets other people addicted to heroin. Comparing the size of the fish and whale again, Bradley could be meaning that this girl gets a lot of people addicted to heroin and is possibly the one who got him addicted.

  3. The line could also possibly not be talking about drugs at all but just about a girl, comparing her to a big blue whale. Saying that this girl has the biggest heart anybody could have, just like how a whale has the biggest heart of all warm-blooded animals. That she is a mysterious, powerful, yet fragile creature, just like a whale.

  4. A reference to the classic biblical story, ‘Jonah and The Whale’. In the story Jonah sacrifices himself for the sake of his crew by being thrown overboard in a violent storm and then is immediately swallowed by a whale.
Bradley could be saying in this line that the heroin addiction had swallowed him whole and he was unable to escape the addiction.

Clive Davis is an American record producer and music industry executive who was chairman and C.E.O. of RCA Records, J Records, Arista Records, and BMG North America. He is currently Chief Creative Officer for Sony Music Entertainment.

He played a big part, or was ‘behind’, the careers of artists such as Alicia Keys (reference to previous line), Christina Aguilera, Barry Manilow, and Kelly Clarkson.

Kendrick uses Clive Davis for a comparison to ‘niggas’ who use guns for protection and to make them seem tough, when in reality they’re really not as tough as the AK’s make them out to be.
