A sandbox is an open environment where you are free to be creative and there are no rules for what you can build. Kendrick was free to exercise his artistic creativity, but he lived in an environment without many of the limitations and restriction that, say, a good parent might impose, left to be on his own.

Sandboxes are one of the dirtiest things for kids to play in. Kendrick’s hometown of Compton is a dirty place to grow up, plagued by gangs, violence, and drugs.

Southern California, where he grew up, is also a desert, adding to the sand imagery.

Also this is about his parents. Kendrick was raised by young parents in Compton. He’s saying that he pretty much raised himself (in a sandbox) and his parents were there but were still doing their young and wild living.

This song aludes to 2 Pac Shakur constantly! that’s actually who he’s talking to in the bridge.

being raised in a sandbox is simply because because he grew up in Compton exactly where 2 PAC developed his career.

the bridge alludes to pac. in the line that says

‘You was holding the handgun, she was giving birth
To a baby boy to be just like you, I wonder what’s that worth’

pac is the one with the gun and kendricks mom is giving birth to him. kendrick is a rapper just like pac who raps about social issues.

‘I-I wonder if you ever knew that you was a role model to me first’

pac is kendrick role model.

‘The next day I-I woke up in the morning, seen you on the news’

pac was always in the news.

‘Looked in the mirror, then realized I-I-I had something to prove’

kendrick modeled himself after pac and wants to rap with substance just like him.

‘You told me “Don’t be like me, just finish watching cartoons” ’

pac had trouble dealing with stardom and didnt want kendrick to go through the same turmoils he did. pac doesnt want kendrick to have to go through the same stuff that he went though as a youth because it was terrible.

The sandbox is a euphemism about the youth of his parents, it represents his young parents having him while they were still raising themselves. In the next sentence he talks about someone holding a handgun. In interviews Kendrick has referred to his father as a “street cat” and in the booklet for Good Kid M.A.A.D. City you can find a picture of Kendrick’s young father holding a huge gun.
