The Knicks accused the Heat of tampering because Riley still had a year left on his contract. To settle the dispute, Miami traded their 1996 first round pick and $1 million in cash to the Knicks on September 1, 1995.

The 90’s Riley-led Heat teams would eventually form a rivalry with his former team, the Knicks.

The Miami Heat was originally owned by a group consisting of Lewis Schaffel, Billy Cunningham, and Micky’s father, Ted Arison.

In the first seven years of the Heat’s existence, they had only made the playoffs twice, getting ousted in the first round both times.

On February 13, 1995, Micky purchased a controlling interest in the Heat and became the Majority Owner.

The Miami Heat’s “Big 3 Era” (as it is colloquially referred to) amounted to 4 straight NBA Finals appearances and back-to-back NBA Finals championships.
