“In Common” is Alicia Key’s first single since 2012’s “Girl On Fire” and places Key’s soft but soulful vocals over smooth tropical beats. The song centers around the idea that “opposites attract”, but in this case Keys and her lover ultimately have too many common traits to be together.
Keys debuted “In Common” as well as “Hallelujah” on the May 7th episode of Saturday Night Live after she teased that new songs were on the way in a Snapchat video.
“In Common” centers around same sex relationships being taboo. In this case Alicia Keys and another woman from her younger years and the romance they may still have but need to keep hidden despite the love they have for each other. It’s a walk down memory lane of the early years before marriage and children for both women.
