In this lost and black world, it’s very easy to become lost in it’s darkness. Leaving you without walls, or guidance in life, and without anything you’re familiar with, like a landmark. This leaves our eyes as the only thing that can guide you through life. While they can see, without anything to guide them, or for them to connections to what they see, they’re rendered useless. Leaving a person with complete sight traveling blindly.

Upon The White Hart exiting his life, Detroit felt barren and alone in the world around him.

Upon her leaving, the world seemed empty. The fact that the city Hiroshima is fitting, for Hiroshima was the first city the US dropped an atomic bomb on. The bombing took the city of 340,000 and turned it into a barren wasteland.

This creates great imagery of barrenness and emptiness, putting images to Detroit’s words really well.

If being in Hiroshima isn’t a good enough image of being alone, Detroit then goes on to describe being shot into space by a trebuchet (French for catapult.) into the dark and cold blackness that is space, possibly to become a Man of A Moon. Truly creating a vivid picture of being by one’s self.

Here we meet the gallant knight for the first time and get a taste for his chivalrous language. Though the play takes place in 1800s Spain, Quixote uses primarily medieval-era language due to the impact the books had on his mind.

Quixote lashes out at and critiques the state of the world he lives in. He’s sick of the aggression, violence, and evil seen in so many men throughout the world. Yet, fear not for Quixote promises to serve the world right and save it from the bleak conditions it has become stuck in.

The possessions, places, and people we care about most in our lives seem so hard to keep close to us. We can drift apart from everything we hold so dear in no time at all. Everything we hold so close can drift away from us in no time as well.

Don Cervantes begins to set the scene of this play within a play.

Don Quixote wasn’t born a knight, he wasn’t even born Don Quixote! Instead, Don Quixote is simply the old scribe Alonso Quijana. In his older years Alonso has spent most of his time reading and studying literature, and this has created a vision in his mind. He is disgusted by the hostility and aggression in the world around him. He longs for the days of honor and chivalry. This obsessive desire finally becomes so large in Alonso’s old mind that he recreates himself as the fearless knight Don Quixote de La Mancha, and sets forth to do away with evil from this world!

It is not known for sure why Cervantes decides to act out his play. It could simply be to delay the taking of his possessions or to pass the time in the prison. But, Cervantes could be using the story of Don Quixote to symbolize the violence seen all around during the Spanish Inquisition, which the play is set during. Don Quixote as a character could very easily represent those going against the church, seen as vile and insane.
