This is a little misleading if you’ve never been to the Barn. There are stairs in the corners of the floor, but they’re only three shorts steps. The players really only use them when coming from the locker room before the game and at halftime.

This is because they removed the old benches and replaced them with regular individual seats after being reprimanded by the fire marshal for packing too many people in. Benches remain in the student section, some of the back seats of the lower deck, and most of the upper deck.

To the tune of “When The Saints Go Marching In”

The #2 overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft and former Buckeye D'Angelo Russell cited the Barn as one of the toughest places to play in college basketball.

This doesn’t really tell the whole story. I was at a party that several basketball players were at the spring Pitino was hired (I worked in their apartment so I knew a lot of them at the time) and Joe Coleman showed up later in the night. Andre Hollins, the leading scorer and captain of the team, started yelling at him to leave when he got there. Nobody outside of the team really knew what was going on at the time because his transfer hadn’t been announced but it was especially strange given Hollins' usual upbeat demeanor – he is almost always smiling.

Later that night it came out that Pitino was just honest with Coleman that he’d need to become a better ball handler and jump shooter if he was going to stay on the team. He was a great athlete that earned Minnesota Mr. Basketball honors but as was typical with a Tubby Smith recruit, he was more of an athlete than a basketball player. Apparently instead of taking Pitino’s challenge to improve his game, he pouted – hence the fallout with the rest of the team. The year after he transferred to St. Mary’s, they came to the Barn for a non-conference game but Coleman didn’t make the trip.

The whole piece hinges on a strawman definition of what a safe space actually is. The real purpose is to provide:

A place where anyone can relax and be fully self-expressed, without fear of being made to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome or unsafe on account of biological sex, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, cultural background, age, or physical or mental ability; a place where the rules guard each person’s self-respect and dignity and strongly encourage everyone to respect others.
