In Five Percent terminology, the Black Man is God and the Black Woman is Earth. Your Old Earth is Ma Dukes.

At the end of his wits, Inspectah sits down with her and has a “Great Awakening” to the joys of the Protestant Ethic.

What his mother explained to him is effectively

That which does not kill us makes us stronger.

A statement credited to philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche from his book, Twilight of the Idols.

For Deck to succeed in life, he must “overcome the heartaches and pain” from the challenges he faces. Essentially – no pain, no gain.

Like Raekwon in the verse before, Inspectah grew up poor and tried to make money selling drugs. Unlike Raekwon, he had bigger problems (i.e. jail) than accumulating Polo outerwear.

He was trying to get a clutch at what he could not touch (the word is left out to be implied by the rhyme).

However, “touch” is present, in echo form, in the music video:

If you don’t respect Rae and the Clan, he and his Intratec TEC-DC9 semi-automatic handgun are going to get real mad.

TEC 9

The Intratec TEC-9 or TEC-DC9, is a blowback-operated semi-automatic pistol, chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum. It was designed by Intratec, an American offshoot of Interdynamic AB. The TEC-9 was made of inexpensive molded polymers and a mixture of stamped and milled steel parts which gave it the dubious distinction of being one of the most widely used “criminal” guns in the US. More than anything, the TEC-9 is known for its large magazine capacity and low price.

For any serious or professional shooter this gun is of little value – it’s too big and heavy to be carried comfortably, too unreliable when firing anything but FMJ ammunition, and has poor accuracy.

All that hard work just so he can sport the same brand he’s been wearing all along. This shows how his life isn’t improving, as he still has the same sweater he was proud of in his youth, but now he’s tired of it.

Without going as far as to call it a metaphor, Rae’s feelings towards the Polo sweater are similar to those he’s beginning to have towards the drug game.

Guns. The name derived from the Gatling gun, one of the earliest rapid-fire weapons in the history of warfare (1861).

Ironically, its inventor, Richard Gatling, thought that the “gat” would lead to fewer deaths by combat (he also never thought that his gun would be a slang rap term, so he wasn’t too good at predictions).

C.R.E.A.M. is an acronym for “Cash Rules Everything Around Me” and has throughout the years become well-established slang for money.

Cream can also be slang for crack, but the Clan is strictly after that cash money. (And you should too, kids!)

Some also may see this line as a reflection on the fact that in their world that they’ve gone into they’re ruled by cash and nothing more. This line was used to underline how they’re unable to make choices based off emotion, goals or point of views yet they’re blinded by their pimp of capitalism.

While many New Yorkers die or fade into the slums, Jay Z “made it”.

Special Ed was a fellow Brooklyn rapper who rapped about what it meant to “make it” in his best known song, “I Got It Made”, released on his 1989 album Youngest in Charge when he was just 16.

“It’s a pity” is also how Large Professor continues his “8 Million stories in the city” line on ATCQ’s “Keep It Rollin'.”

These opening lines presage a whole verse about what it’s like to become famous quickly, and how Kanye’s taken advantage of the fact that he’s done it.

What happened to the days when you could say things like “so many niggas on my nuts I thought I lost my dick” without having to plead “no homo”?

It’s also worth noting that Kanye is using the “no homo” trope just to set up the no Volvo joke: Kanye is on the record saying that rap is too homophobic and the use of “no homo” in a Kanye verse is completely out of character if not understood as a set-up for the joke.

The phrase “Joe Blow” means a hypothetical average man. So Kanye is simply saying it’s crazy how you can go from being classed as average to being classed as super-star and having everybody on you and buzzing off you which in his terms is “everybody on your dick”. The “no homo” bit was just him adding flair to the bar and setting up the line to rhyme with the next bar.
