Frank recognizes that his feelings—the pain of being in love with someone who could never love him back—are unhealthy. He knows he needs to break free of this stagnant relationship, but even at the end of the song he’s unsure how to accomplish this.

Frank could also be calling out communities, not necessarily just religious ones, whose beliefs lead them condemn queerness, causing incredible mental anguish to the LGBTQ+ people in those communities who feel alienated and “sick” with the supposed wrongness of their feelings. As Frank explained in his tumblr post on the Orlando shootings,

Many hate us and wish we didn’t exist. Many are annoyed by our wanting to be married like everyone else or use the correct restroom like everyone else. Many don’t see anything wrong with passing down the same old values that send thousands of kids into suicidal depression each year. So we say pride and we express love for who and what we are. Because who else will in earnest?
