Pink Floyd was one of the most influential prog-rock bands of all time, with releases spanning from the mid-60’s to the mid-90’s.

Their most well known albums include The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), whose prismatic album artwork is one of the most iconic images in music history, and The Wall (1979), a double album widely recognized as a definitive example of both a concept album and rock opera.

Like HNDRXX album namesake Jimi Hendrix, much of Pink Floyd’s music draws upon psychedelia, to which Future compares lean’s influence on his own music. Further parallels can be drawn between Floyd and Future in their tumultuous creative and legal battles.

After founding member Syd Barrett, who was thought of as the creative force behind Pink Floyd in the early years, was officially removed from the band after just one album due to erratic behavior and speculation of mental illness, Roger Waters stepped forward as the front for the band during it’s most successful run from 1968 to 1985. He eventually left the band amidst creative differences. David Gilmour, who had replaced Barrett, became the leader of the band’s third incarnation despite legal disputes from Waters that argued against Gilmour’s rights to use the band name without him. Pink Floyd would continue to put out albums to commercial success, but with less critical praise.

Though Future’s singular creative prowess is unquestioned as a solo act, recent legal battles with former manager Rocko mirror the contractual obligations and disputes that spanned Pink Floyd’s tenure.

Eggshells feature prominently as a metaphor for frailty and vulnerability in “Humpty”, whose title and coda allude to English nursery rhyme character Humpty Dumpty. Mitski spends this track figuratively tiptoeing around predicted problems in the manner of idiomatic phrase “walking on eggshells”, afraid to set any consequences in motion.

The song fosters a sense of grim imminence; like the inevitability of Humpty Dumpty’s fall, her state of paralyzing worry will eventually surface in the actual problems she hides from, but for now she takes solace in the bathtub.

noise pop (i guess?) that occasionally let its smoothness cross the thin line from pleasing to boring, but has some solid cuts like the too-short (not too $hort) “pommerate”
