The poem is set up with the use of multiple paradoxes. Boats, fish, and men perform actions that could only occur in a parallel universe, and not in the one we are familiar with. These paradoxes are meant to define the world in which a particular someone loves the author of the poem. Therefore, it is suggested that only in a parallel universe will the author’s love be requited, and that it is not something that will ever happen in the world he lives in.
