“Pair” could also refer to a pair of wings. The Jordans made him feel as if he could fly and they lifted his self-confidence. Getting hot new kicks was like getting a pair of wings.
Coincidentally, there is also the saying “grow a pair” (referring to a pair of balls), meaning gathering the confidence to do something. By getting a pair of Jordans, he “grew a pair” and gained the courage to go outside and present himself among his peers.
