If Sage sold his soul like every other rapper today he’d be rich and famous but also generic and fake, like pop magician David Blaine.
Hell of a lot going on here:
The first line is a play on masturbation. Sage has been masturbating the rap game for years–if he shot his load with the first “hand” he “played” (with), he wouldn’t have grown as an artist.
The first line also means that Sage, much like an expert poker player, doesn’t give himself away. He’s an excellent bluffer who survives with his poker face.
The second line refers to a jack-in-the-box, meaning a cheap toy that performs one trick and then gets tiresome. Sage is not this.
Also, David Blaine is better than most magicians, so maybe Sage should reconsider this metaphor.
This line also implies that if Sage had given his best effort and become a commercially successful rapper, he would be confined, stifled, and hindered by the restrictions of the music (rap) industry, like a monkey (man) in a box (cage, jail).
Also, Sage’s reference to David Blaine (an eminent figure in magic) serves to emphasize the contempt he feels for his own industry–he has no respect for it’s most eminent figures.
