When they come to jump aboard, a lot of times, when there’s a movement that’s a little bit against the grain, there’s some people that are slower to follow. You know what I mean? And they call those people band wagoners. They jump on when it gets hot. What I was trying to say is, when they come and recognize that this is what we all want to be on or that they don’t want to feel shame with being with somebody that’s got them and amongst through the other things, saying, “I’m not going to be pressed that people are figuring it out.” That’s what we deal with a lot. It’s like, oh, you wasn’t rocking with this shit back then. It’s like, there’s no shame in that. It’s like when you find it, you find it. When you get there, you get it. Oh, and it’s just a raw line.

That’s Denzel Washington’s signature line. And mind you, I never said Denzel Washington once. I’m trying to get people to fully reach back through nostalgia. I guarantee it is a line that Denzel Washington uses in every movie. If you Google it right now, Denzel Washington, “I guarantee it.” There’s 40 movies where he says, “I’ll get you your money by dollar. I guarantee it.” That’s what he says. He says it in every movie, whatever he’s talking about. “We’re going to get these boys to the state championship. I guarantee it.” He’s like, whatever movie it is, that I guarantee it. He says it. I guarantee you he says that shit, and then yeah.

My favorite line, the Malcolm X dolly’d out, that’s probably one of my favorite lines I ever made. That’s a signature Spike Lee shot. He puts you on a dolly, and he puts the camera on the dolly, and the dolly, just for people that don’t work in film, dolly is like a little thing that you stand on or you could place a camera on, and it makes it so that when the camera moves, it moves so smooth that it looks like it’s gliding or floating. And so, Spike Lee in literally every movie that he’s ever had, and he has at least three I can think of off the top with Denzel Washington I know, where he does this intense shot where it looks like it’s supposed to symbolize Denzel Washington moving as fast as he can down the street, and because of the way that the trees and everything are floating and how his body isn’t really moving, how walking does, it looks like you’re floating, and just that feeling of being so secure in the city that I don’t feel like I need to be moving a certain way, or just being in a position where I could trust in something or trust in my destiny is that main feeling.

We used to watch Molly’s Big Comfy Couch at my Auntie Carolyn’s house when I was a kid, and I don’t really remember what the show was about. I don’t know. I just realized, is she a clown? I just seen a picture. I was like, this lady is a clown. You don’t know what you’re taking in when you’re a kid, but I remember that. I remember seeing that couch, like that’s a big-ass couch. I want a couch that’s that big because it looks comfy, but I just speak about having that feeling of not having to worry or be worrisome, because I know who’s God and who’s in control.

I remember the first time I took Kirsten shopping, and it wasn’t as long ago as it should have been, but I took Kirsten shopping or the first time, like it was a shopping spree. And she was like, “Okay, cool. Why are you following me around?” I was like, “I don’t know. I thought we were going on a shopping spree.” She was like, “Yo, if you don’t sit your ass down …” it’s a whole thing where woman do want your company, but they don’t necessarily need you to be overseeing everything and making like, “Oh, what’s the price tag on them shoes? You should try these ones.” I think that’s how God works. He doesn’t want us to micro manage everything. He definitely doesn’t want us to sit down or lay down and just take everything, you know what I mean? He doesn’t want us to just be docile or immobile, but he also doesn’t want us to be in a position where we feel like we have to strategize every single piece of everything, because you can’t take things out of god’s hands. They going to work how they work. When I wrote it I don’t know exactly what I was talking about. A lot of stuff in the lyrics, it feels like it didn’t have as much of a meaning when I would have wrote it as it does to me now.

Woosah means woosah. It’s just a calming effort. It’s used by a lot of different people. It’s like when you get ramped up. Woosah, you know? But the actual pretty sure I need you in the season like a flu shot, I’m not anti-vaxxer, and I’m not anti-anti-vaxxer. I live my own life. I don’t tell anyone what to do, but in my faith we talk about seasons and going through different seasons and understanding that there’s different parts of your life. Just like I was talking about eras. There’s different times where certain things are going on and how they unfold. Sometimes you have a tumultuous season. Sometimes you have a season of abundant blessings. Sometimes you have a season of where you’re supposed to just sit down and shut up. Sometimes you have a season where you’re supposed to go out and exclaim what you’re supposed to say.

I talk about false idols and worshiping these worldly things. A lot of music since even before Acid Rap, and that’s just always been something that I was keen to, that I was explained the idea of covenant things that are worldly and getting caught up in gold and big statues and just things that are of this world and not godly things. And I think even to a certain extent we, in my industry, we grow to really worship and have a need for these awards, and I think I’m not saying that I don’t want an EGOT. I’m just saying as long as I got God I don’t need anything else, you know what I’m saying? Just for the record just for people that don’t know I guess, the EGOT is when you get the Emmy, the Grammy, the Oscar, and the Tony. That was something that was on my list all the time, but I feel like me just trying to understand that I’m going to be a person way longer than I’m going to be a rapper, you know what I’m saying? And I’m going to be a spirit way longer than I’m going to be a person, so I got to get all those things in line and make sure that I’m prioritizing the right things.

At first, you start coming to church and you finally decide one day I’m going to clap. I’m not going to clap louder than everybody else, but I just felt that. Then, the next thing you get is you start to get that one hand up. Then, you get a little more confidence. The next time you come you got two hands up. Then, you’re standing up, and you start to realize as you’re rapping that that looks like Wu-Tang. Wu-Tang.

So first of all, you know, the reason why we got married beyond locking in our family and tradition and love and all those things, it is a part of I believe what were are supposed to do. Everything wasn’t fulfilled just because I made a Christian rap album, you know what I mean? There’s certain things that you got to do to be right, or to be at peace. So, we give the glory to him first of all for even allowing this to happen or giving us the strength to make it to there. Then, we just got to let him know who he talking to. The one living true God, they called them Yahweh back in the day, the God of Israelites.

I would say the third verse was written probably six months after I started working on the first and second verse, and so a lot changed. I was engaged by that point. Me and my wife together conquered my cigarette addiction, so I went on a little sabbatical with her and came back and was cigarette free. We got pregnant. That was like a big deal. That was a big change I feel like is us about to have another kid. I think everybody has eras. Even if you’re not Kanye West where you can categorize it by what clothes he’s wearing, what the bear look like on different albums, like everybody in the world goes through different little eras and moments in their life.
