In 1992, the Source named him best unsigned artist. With three straight excellent albums (Resurrection, One Day It’ll All Make Sense, and Water for Chocolate) he’s become a recognized and respected figure in hip hop.At this point (at the release of Electric Circus in 2002) Common’s been in the game for 10 years, so he may be speaking from experience when he says fame “seems mundane in the scope of thangs.”

He’s also seen various artists grow in fame to become widely recognized, such as Jay-Z. This does not matter to him compared to staying true to himself and hip-hop.

Interestingly, Jay-Z said that he would like to rap like Common, being a conscious rapper, on Moment of Clarity but that he stuck with rapping mainstream because of the fame and money he gained.

Like many conscious/underground rappers, he’s expressing his apathy for fame.
