I love Nolan Arenado. If I had to name my five favorite players in baseball right now, my list would be something like: Mike Trout, Clayton Kershaw, Yadier Molina, Dellin Betances, and Nolan Arenado.

People already know his name. In his two seasons, he’s won the Gold Glove award for third base both years. There’s a general consensus that he’s the best at third in the game, but there’s a chance he’s the best defensive player in all of baseball. He definitely gives Andrelton Simmons a good competition. It would be in your best interest to watch all eight minutes of this video. I guarantee it.

In 2015, people won’t just know his name, but they’ll worship it. In 2014, he hit .287 and had a 28 game hitting streak—clearly he can play offense too. I think he had onto his offense and keep his defensive wizardry to be one of the best players in baseball. A 30 homer and .300 average campaign is very possible to me.

He will be a star. I’m calling it.

If I had to choose a winner of the AL East, it would be Toronto. Since being the biggest superpower in Major League Baseball in the early 1990’s, the Blue Jays have yet to make the playoffs once. The Blue Jays aren’t a great team overall, but there’s one aspect that I absolutely love…

Why I love them

Their offense is superb. Their offense is so incredible up and down the line up, it could be enough for them to win 90 games and the division.

  • Jose Reyes (no longer winning batting titles and stealing 60 bases, but still stole 30 last season)

  • Russell Martin (.402 OBP last season)

  • Jose Bautista (35 homers, 100+ RBI, .400+ OBP last season)

  • Edwin Encarnacion (42, 36, 34 homers the past three seasons)

  • Josh Donaldson (Fourth in 2013 MVP voting)

Why I don’t love them

Reyes, Bautista, and Encarnacion have all had their fair share of injury problems. Their bullpen and starting staff have also been hurt by health, but they were never really good. Their bullpen is pretty mediocre to be honest, but hopefully by opening day they sign a real closer.

As a Yankees fan, the Beasts of the Easts have always been the division that I look out after the most. There was a time period for about a decade where the Yankees and Red Sox had the biggest rivalry in the world and competed for the top two spots, while the rest were feasted on at the bottom.

Boy have things changed, especially last season.

No team really seem to excelled last season except for the Orioles. This season is even more interesting because all five teams are relatively equivalent in talent to me. I simply can’t predict what the standings will look like because no team definitely looks like the best or worst. With every team, there are reasons to praise and criticize the team.

After nine Italians were put on trial for being falsely accused of the assassination of David Hennessy, eleven were lynched. Italians around New Orleans were arrested for the chance that they might have been involved. Hennessy claimed that “the Dagoes did it.”

For whatever reason, there are a lot slurs for Italians in America. There are:

  • Guidos: The dude who slicks his hair and wears those tight shirts or whatever.

  • Guineas: It’s not quite 100% sure where this originated from. Some think that nativists reacted to the “olive” Europeans by implying they weren’t white, or a Guinea negro or Euro negro.

  • WOP: With Out Papers. To say implying that the person was an illegal immigrant.

  • Greaseball: The greasy hair.

  • Dago: Not really sure where this is from.

A lot of Italian-Americans are Roman Catholic. A lot. Confirmation in the Church and feasts on Christmas Eve, Christmas, and Easter are all common.

As one of the “new immigrants” of America in the late 1800s and early 1900s, a lot Americans passed on their British tradition of hating the arrival of Catholics.

Catholicism was a staple to the ideas of two of the New World’s adventurers, Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci.

Italian is in the top 10 languages of America. Pretty good right? Not really. Italian culture is a little different from other cultures in the fact that they still practice many of their traditions in America—except for the language. For whatever reason, Italians assimilated very well to English.

Here’s a stat: a 55.2% decrease has been seen in the Italian-speaking population of America. Most of the second-generation Italian-Americans don’t speak Italian and the language will surely decrease more as more people aren’t taught it.
