This is my favorite line of the song. It speaks to the reality that none of us lasts forever, and that by definition nothing can retain the hype of freshness. At some point you either are or you aren’t, but you cannot always be “next.” Next is a fleeting quality, one that we crave for its promise of change but that inevitably disappoints.

I meant here that when you’re the next big thing you are everyone’s new project and opportunity. The next big thing keeps the agents, managers, labels, journalists, and fans looking fresh, innovative, youthful, timeless.

The whole lyric is ironic, and speaks sarcastically from our standpoint as a group that during our last release felt firsthand our culture’s bottomless obsession with nextness, newness, and youth. We’re saying here that people need fresh blood in culture at all times. It’s more privileged than quality.
