Like Charles Barkley, Joe is not a role model. Following up on the Basketball theme, Budden doesn’t want you to look up to him because he’s a bad example. He responds based on his instincts, doing “a lot on spite,” meaning that a lot of his actions and words are a direct result of hatred; he does a lot on spite because he’s bitter that no one was there to guide him (perhaps in his early years.) Despite this hatred, he won’t shoot at you, because no one showed him where the (metaphorical) gym was (a play on shooting basketballs versus guns, and also potential reference to Drake’s diss verse towards Common on Stay Schemin', in which Drake references Kobe Bryant’s wife’s settlement of $150 Million following their divorce.) Lots of rappers come from hardships growing up (where shooting may be deemed a solution to a dispute) and make bad decisions, which would make them bad role models. Budden is using himself as a paradigm, thus explaining that rappers should not be viewed as such.

Joe might also be saying that no one gave him any opportunity to come up, in other words they didn’t even show him the metaphorical gym, let alone let him “shoot” with them (a reference to the Drake line.) Lots of people have been sleeping on Joe (unaware of his talent) and many of those same people probably never game him a chance. Thus, he sometimes acts out of hatred, feeling like he has nothing to prove and he deserves greater recognition. Since he acts this way, he doesn’t want to be looked up to cause he knows many of his actions are wrong.

Budden may also be saying that he wouldn’t allow a woman get close enough to take what he has earned, as Vanessa Bryant did with Kobe.

Acronym for “You Only Live Once,” often used an an excuse for girls to act out. The name of a restaurant in Miami, Drake popularized the phrase with his track The Motto (which Meek is spitting over.) Drake and Rick Ross (Meek’s MMG affiliate) are said to be releasing a Y.O.L.O mixtape in the coming months.

Ross took an especial liking to the phrase, for on Lord Knows‘ interlude, Ross shouts out what Drake fans now know as The Motto.

DJ Screw, the “chopped-and-screwed” genre’s namesake, has had a substantial influence on Houston hip-hop, even after his death from a codeine overdose in 2000.

“Throwed” is Houston slang for being drunk—Paul Wall famously touched on the subject in “I’m Throwed.”

This beat was from a famous freestyle on DJ Screw’s June 27 tape: a chopped-and-screwed version of Kris Kross“Da Streets Ain’t Right.”

June 27 was arguably DJ Screw’s most famous tape, namely for the half-hour long freestyle over this instrumental. The tape was recorded and named in celebration of his homie D-Moe’s birthday.

These lyrics originally appear in The Notorious B.I.G.’s 1994 song “Warning.”

Chunk up the deuce means throwing up a backwards peace sign, which is a common form of salutation in the South.

Also, a deuce is known in Houston and elsewhere as 2 oz. of codeine.

The way Savage says “Oh shit,” you know just what he means. You know he’s talking about a girl. You might even know he’s talking about her butt if you understand this phrase. You don’t need to hear any more of the song to know what it’s about.

At some point the meaning of “Oh shit!” has changed from a bad thing to a good thing. The meaning has changed from “Oh no!” to “Oh yes!” Savage sould get some credit for this, if not all the credit. Now there are many songs titled “Oh shit!” and others with “Oh shit!” as lyrics (Fergie, Cydeways, Mareko, etc.) Even in movies this phrase, with its new meaning, has caught on. In Scary Movie, “Oh shit!” is Shorty’s catchphrase. He says “Oh shit!” when he finds out he’ll be on TV, and then when he sees himself on TV.

The phrase “move it like a gypsy” appears to be something Savage just made up. It doesn’t refer to anything in music or culture. The idea is probably that a gypsy moves in a very sexual, uninhibited and mesmerizing way.

These lines emphasize that 2 Chainz has always been the way he is. A mean mug is an angry facial expression, while nappy hair is common among those of African descent and grows in helix shape. He goes on to continue talking about his uncanny maturity as an infant later in this verse:

I was born a hustler, paraphernalia in my baby pictures
