DJ Screw would have hundreds of people show up at his door at 8 AM sharp to purchase Screw tapes, and Screw, his girlfriend, and other S.U.C. members would sell tapes ‘til there weren’t any left. Police officers would often disperse the crowd, partially owed to the fact that many illicit activities were underway in waiting for a tape. However, Screw and others argued that the city’s officers were just confused because they were generating all this publicity and revenue and it was all completely legal. Though Northern Houston proffered a good amount of Screw’s imitators, none of them, not even DJ Michael “5000” Watts, (cofounder of Swishahouse w/ Ron “OG Ron C” Coleman) effected turnouts as large as Screw’s, which is largely why Screw is considered the father of the chopped and screwed genre, for even if there is dispute as to who originated the practice, Screw was certainly the one who made it famous.
