Weekend at Burnie’s was released shortly after Curren$y signed a deal with Warner Bros. establishing his imprint, Jet Life Recordings.

This followed a quick – and unsuccessful – stint with Damon Dash’s BluRoc Records. Throughout this time, however, Curren$y maintained the same consistent hustle, putting out multiple projects (Pilot Talk I & II, Covert Coup).

As if it weren’t already clear, Spitta points out that no major label conflict is going to keep him out of the game.

Kendrick is saying that Drake has almost everything he wants (evident from the previous bars), but he’s missing Aaliyah (a famous R&B singer who tragically died in a 2001 plane crash), a play on the emotional and possessive definitions of the word “missing”.

This is supported by the letter to Aaliyah which Drake wrote a while back, along with his track “Unforgettable” from his debut, Thank Me Later, featuring a sample of Aaliyah’s “At Your Best (You Are Love)”, and “We’ll Be Fine” off Take Care.

Kendrick is also literally referring to the black convertible Aaliyah was singing on top of in her “One in a Million” video

Kendrick’s song “Blow My High (Members Only)” is also about Aaliyah.
