As an ideology radically different from that employed everywhere else in the world then and now, anarchism is something for the future. We do not know when it will take hold of humanity, the conditions in which the revolution will come, we only know that is is the natural progression of the emancipation of the modern man.

It may come in response to vile conditions, as the anarchist societies of the past came about in civil war, or it may come from peaceful revolution as the people demand liberation from inhumane authority.

This poem was used as the introduction of Emma Goldman’s classic “Anarchism and Other Essays.”

It essentially illustrates the negative connotations people have with the term anarchism/anarchy and how the ideology doesn’t mean without rules, but without rulers.

This book, like Down and Out in Paris and London, shows how valuable a firsthand account can be when it comes from such a skilled writer. I learned a lot about one of the most misrepresented civil wars and revolutions in history. The way thought was controlled in the English press is particularly fascinating. It’s quite funny, watching Orwell demonstrate how it directly contradicted what actually happened. This book also made 1984 and Animal Farm make more sense.

The transformation of the revolutionary attitude in Barcelona was interesting. One of the cool things, especially as a Spanish-language student, was how the expressions used by Spaniards was altered to informal, egalitarian things like comrade instead of things liked usted and don. This is the most I’ve learned about application of anarchist principles.
