Has had no money, but he could rap. He wished that counted for more, so he could make up for his lack of cash.

before the deal, before the critically acclaimed album that this track featured on, Has was (even more) broke. He had no money to talk for him, so looked like a liar, making false promises to those he loved.

high-school kids with skinny jeans are the in-crowd now. it’s fashionable. they get the girls. Has-Lo wore those jeans in school before they were cool, and got ripped on.

back in the day, ripped, distressed looking jeans were all the rage. the kids who couldn’t afford the expensive, pre-ripped jeans just did it themselves.

Some rappers take inspiration from fictional gangsters, such as Scarface, or The Godfather. Others liken themselves to real life gangsters Rick Ross, or Frank Lucas.

Witness takes a slightly different approach.

He likens his philosophy to comedian, writer, co-creator of Seinfeld, and all around swell guy, Larry David. An underrated Hip Hop icon, I would argue.

In many ways, Larry is hip hop incarnate.

• Many rappers boast about how real they are. Larry is real, to the extent that his tolerance for B.S. results in many of the situations that drive forward the narrative of the show. You don’t get realer than that.

• Every other episode seems to feature a new woman in his life, more gorgeous than the last.

• He hails from the rap motherland, New York City.

• Balling: he’s magnitudes wealthier than the majority of rap stars, with an estimated fortune around $800 million dollars.

Witness might not have been alluding to this, but he’s certainly leading the charge in giving Larry his due recognition within hip hop.

one downside to touring, being forced to sit through wack rap sets, is juxtaposed with the cheap beer and pretty, tattoed girls that form the upside.

Living conditions on tour are less than ideal. A sore back from an uncomfortable back-seat nap is part of the territory.

the tour life lets you get a little bit of love from the people you make music from. then it’s back to the studio, the “blackboard”, to make more music.

the South is affectionately referred to as “America’s back porch” here, a term Southerner’s might not see the charm of.

The trip involves stops at not-quite-luxury diners, serviced by women with the kind of class that can be summed up by the gold teeth they adorn themselves with.
