Judas was one of the 12 original apostles to Jesus Christ who betrayed him by revealing his identity to the Sanhedrin. As a result, his name and legacy is one that’s considered as treacherous and disloyal. In the same vein, D Smoke exercises caution even to his friends and loved ones because even the ones closest to you can betray you.

Stan Lee is the late comic book writer who not only was Marvel Comics primary creative leader for two decades but was also famous for co-creating the popular Marvel superheroes such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the X-Men. While the heroes themselves were fictional, Stan Lee indirectly served as a hero for many individuals who looked up to his creations while he himself appeared in just about every film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a cameo role.

Similarly, D Smoke is trying to become a hero to the youth in his hometown Inglewood or at the very least, create the hero the city needs.

Tyler’s significant other struggles with being true to themselves and honest in the relationship, perhaps due to his significant other being closeted. This is shown in “A BOY IS A GUN” where Tyler raps:

Take your hoodie off, why you hide your face from me?
Make your fuckin' mind up, I am sick of waitin' patiently

Despite this, Tyler is still grateful that he was even able to be a part of the truth this person refused to admit: the fact that they were in a relationship. Either that or Tyler may be saying that he’s glad that he was true to himself despite his lover’s reservedness. As can be shown in songs like “NEW MAGIC WAND”, Tyler has no shame in admitting that he desperately craves this person’s love:

I wanna share last names, I wanna be your number one
Not the other one, keep it on the low
I’m in my right mind, keep it on a high
Janis Joplin spillin' feelings, now I’m out here moppin' ‘em

The way in which Tyler pronounces “peace” is highly reminiscent of how fellow California rapper Ab-Soul says it during the bridge of the song “Beautiful Death”.

The title of the aforementioned track also serves as a bit of a metaphor in what’s currently going on in the narrative – the relationship between Tyler and this individual has ended partly due to one of them never living their truth, but Tyler was just happy to experience it. Otherwise, a beautiful death.

Trayvon Martin was a 17 year old African-American from Florida who was fatally shot at the hands of a civilian George Zimmerman who claimed self-defense and was eventually acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges. The incident sparked a myriad of rallies and marches across the nation pointing the death of Trayvon to be racially motivated. Reason is fearful that his unborn son could suffer the same fate as Trayvon seeing as how Zimmerman referred to Trayvon as “suspicious” when he was in fact coming back from the local 7-11.

On the same coin, Reason also fears suffering the same fate as Eric Garner who was murdered in the hands of NYPD officers – forcing his kids to grow up without a father figure in their lives.

Not only is Ab-Soul employing some wordplay with the popular guessing game that uses a stick figured man to illustrate the amount of guesses left throughout the game, he’s also referring to legal contracts and how signing on the dotted line in essence can lead to some adverse side-effects. “Draw to stick you for your figures” alludes to armed robbery as in you’ll get a gun pulled on you for your money, but in a metaphorical sense.

Kendrick is among the many critics of U.S. president Donald Trump, who was inaugurated in January 2017. Many hip-hop artists share a mutual disdain for Trump—Kendrick’s fellow Compton rapper YG released a song titled “FDT (Fuck Donald Trump)” in March 2016.

This also isn’t the first time K-Dot has referenced Donald Trump on a track; he mentioned Trump on 2015’s “Black Friday” and rapped about vandalizing and smoking weed in the Trump Tower on label-mate Isaiah Rashad’s 2016 track “Wat’s Wrong.”
