It seems as though the ladies are paying more attention to Donovan (which is XV’s real name) now because he’s a rapper; this type of thing is very common with many rappers (such as Childish Gambino coincidentally)

Seems to be a sort of cryptic hook as it is repeated throughout the entirety of the 4:30 minute song. The link to this song was tweeted by Childish to Jhene along with a message reading “here”.

Keep in mind that although they’re not dating, they do have a very close relationship.

This sample was stated by Ariel from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”) to her father, King Triton in reference to Eric, the human man she fell in love with.

Going back to the previous line, this is probably what girls say to their father talking about Donald. Besides, Gambino knows them better than their own fathers do.

This is a sentiment many rappers (as well as various other types of people) will advocate for; it’s important to go back to where you are from and assist those who come after you because since you have the knowledge and strength to leave, it only makes sense to help other people from where you started from.

For example, Nas had a similar idea in the Young Jeezy song My President:

No matter how big you can ever be
For whatever fee or publicity, never lose your integrity

Here’s another popular example of this idea coming from a huge NBA star.

During his presidency, there was a rumor that Obama would turn the government into a martial law regime (which hasn’t been done since World War II). A democratic congresswoman suggested the idea to end the government shutdown.

This isn’t the first time Soulo has brought up martial law. He mentioned it on his famous outro to Section 80

Stephen Glover, better known as Steve G. Lover is the younger brother of Childish Gambino who’s a part of the “Royalty” group (derived from Gambino’s first mixtape) and has frequently collaborated with his brother.

During this part, he’s talking to Gambino on the phone about a funny video he saw on the internet of a dude getting hurt. It shows how commonplace it is for us to laugh at videos of people in pain and how the internet itself makes it easier for us to show videos that we enjoy to our friends.

The kid wasn’t getting hurt, he was just overreacting to silly string that was shot on him. The video and Steve G talking about it could reference the whole idea of ‘trolling’, like much of the album does because the kid isn’t hurt, just bothered. Though he’s overreacting as if he’d been hurt, which is how many trolled victims act.

He’s also using his brother’s words as an example of people abusing the internet and laughing at ‘viral videos’ at the expense of others, which is pretty much the theme of Because The Internet

Looks like you already brought it back, Gambino.

This can also be heard as “throwback”, a term usually used on the internet to provoke nostalgia. Living off this nostalgia instead of facing the future is an important struggle on this album. As Bino puts it:

If you go on Tumblr you’ll see a lot of nostalgia, a lot of, ‘Remember Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Remember Sister, Sister? Remember Clarissa?’ It’s a lot of that. I don’t think we want to go forward, because it’s a little scary.

Kilo Kish is a New York-based vocalist who has worked together with Gambino multiple times including on his song “Make It Go Right”. He plays on her name to emphasize his lavish lifestyle and make the claim that his weekends cost as much as you’d have to pay for a kilogram of cocaine.

This is not the first time Bino has claimed one of his possessions costs “a kilo”.
