The “system” is commonly used to refer to the Government system. He’s saying that the government is a strong root in the disruption of the consciousness of the average person in the ghetto.

Also, this could be heard as “a system”, or speaker system. He’s describing this beast as having hip hop beats as its heartbeat, possibly a cutting commentary on hip hop’s perpetual involvement with all things considered “evil” by the media.

Devlin was on the train an hour before 7/7 happened.

The 7 July 2005 London bombings (often referred to as 7/7) were a series of co-ordinated suicide attacks in London which targeted civilians using the public transport system during the morning rush hour. Fifty-two civilians and the four bombers were killed in the attacks, and over 700 more were injured.

A riff on the saying “slower than cold molasses” or “slower than molasses in january,” which refers to molasses that are so cold they don’t really flow or move at all.
