Johnny Cash changed this line from the Nine Inch Nails’s original “I wear this crown of shit,” to add a Biblical allusion that casts the speaker as a Christ figure. In Matthew, the crown of thorns was a derisive parody of royal authority placed on Jesus' head by his torturers during the crucifixion:

And when they had plaited a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee and mocked him, saying Hail, King of the Jews!

“Upon my liar’s chair,” in the context of Cash’s revision, suggests the ways in which the speaker has fallen short of the Christ-like ideal he strives for or outwardly represents.

Concept & Drug:

He’s supposedly the king, but his throne is a liar’s chair and his crown is made of shit, exactly the opposite of what a respectable king should be wearing. Essentially, he’s tried to make himself something he’s not.

Interestingly, Johnny Cash changed this line to “I wear this crown of thorns” in a Jesus reference that works powerfully in the music video of his “Hurt” cover.

Trent Reznor has also changed this line to “I wear this crown on thorns” in some performances, following Cash’s cover.

Gonage comes unexpectedly with a typical rap boast that still manages to poke fun at recent events. Gucci Mane—Waka Flocka’s mentor and the hood’s favorite ice cream man—infamously threw a girl out of a moving car after a bad deal. Not only is Gonage wrapped in Gucci like a second seat belt in his whip, he is physically buckled into the car to avoid the same fate as Gucci’s girl.

A normal day for Gonage is everyone else’s vacation, including $1000 shoes and the common sense to keep his crimes from the police. Who is Gonage? Few know today, but expect more from the Georgia local and his Brick Squad connections.
