The plan, filled with generalizations, unfunded mandates, and a continuation of the same fundamental misunderstandings of climate science that plagues other nations, does not appear to actively pursue a significant reduction in global pollution.

An assessment that NOAA has actually not supported in full. Perhaps if President Obama were to fund them a bit more…

Via NOAA’s study:

“It is premature to conclude that human activities–and particularly greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming–have already had a detectable impact on Atlantic hurricane activity. That said, human activities may have already caused changes that are not yet detectable due to the small magnitude of the changes or observational limitations, or are not yet properly modeled (e.g., aerosol effects).”

Every weather event is indeed caused by natural climate change.

While simultaneously allowing for the cutting of the EPA’s budget to the point that the agency can no longer effectively regulate industry or the environment. By issuing what amounts to an Executive Order without teeth, the President is only symbolically addressing the problem; in reality, the EPA is in no way capable of making the needed changes.

The United States has failed to ratify the sweeping Kyoto Protocol, naming the failure of the measure to hold “third-world” nations accountable and the “harm” to the U.S. economy. The short-sighted refusal to consider even curbing emissions since the Clinton administration has lead to essentially no global progress on climate change.

Even the positive consequences of climate change policy are wrapped in short-sighted, ineffective measures. Lowering home energy bills and focusing on “American-made” sources of energy are not solutions to a global problem, only possible side effects to overall climate policy. Due to the relative lag in clean energy development in the 20th century, it is not likely that new forms of clean energy will be anywhere near as cheap as current forms of non-renewable energy, without serious government subsidies. Likewise, only a globally oriented climate policy can address the global climate issue. The heath of the entire world’s environment is not a time for political tokens.

In review, NOAA has actually not supported this idea. While it can be modeled that climate change leads to more intense, localized storms and weather patterns, it is not proven in literature.

“Toughest” does not translate to “tough enough” – the government’s plan to raise the average fuel economy by 2016 to 35.5 miles per gallon addresses only the symptoms of climate change causes, not the core issues. At note is a fundamental disconnect between an understanding of the science at hand and the real world issues; only reducing car use (against an exponential growth worldwide) in parallel with higher standards can make a significant dent in emissions.

The two ideas posed in this – reversing climate change and slowing the effects of climate change – are wildly different. The methods to slow climate change, from reducing dependency on oil, coal, and natural gas to cleaning pollution, have little short term impact on the damage already done by carbon and similar greenhouse emissions.

Actually reversing climate change means removing existing greenhouse gases and attempting to recreate a degree of Earth’s natural state. From removing atmospheric carbon to changing land use and population centers, these shift will take generations. More likely is that, due to the already high concentrations, greenhouse gases will continue to impact the environment for hundreds of years, even if the sources are all removed.
