While it is the chain’s most publicized and prominent item, it is actually not the first introduced. Coming about in 1967, in part as a response to similarly large burgers at Big Boy, the Big Mac has grown to become synonymous with the chain. Featuring the catchy special sauce (essentially Thousand Island dressing and mayonnaise), lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions on a sesame seed bun, the recipe itself even became a jingle.
