These lyrics are reminiscent of refrains from the TPAB track “You Ain’t Gotta Lie (Momma Said),” wherein Kendrick raps
In the former track, Kendrick decries mainstream rappers who name drop expensive clothing brands, make reference to how much money they have, and other braggadocious lyrics. In this series of lines, however, Kendrick connects himself to being a part of the problem, identifying this as a “universal callout” and certifying his membership to that club of mainstream rappers who act this way. In such an ironic twist of fate, Kendrick employs one of the first examples to demonstrate why looking to him as a perfect, infallible savior is misguided.
“I can members only that” as a form of behavior might also be a reference to “Blow My High (Members Only)” from Section.80.
“Universal callout, I can members only that”
I interpreted this as Kendrick referring to his control verse. He’s one of the only rappers to call out everyone and he’s doing it again
This line is SO OBVIOUSLY about BLM and millions of unaccounted-for dollars they used to enrich themselves while never actually giving back or doing much positive for the Black community…and obviously, Kendrick can call this out as a Black man–he can “member’s only that”.
