They say it's a cold world
But nigga I heard hell's hot
Winner's Never Lose by Corner Boy P

Two possible interpretations here:

Life is parallel to hell but I must maintain

  • “It’s a cold world” being contradictory to the Hell in Christianity being described as being hot, implying that this world is hell

  • Implying that this world is worse than what hell is described as being, because if you can’t stand the cold of this world, hell is much hotter.

Background

In Art II, we were told to do a piece in the genre of Surrealism, our current subject.

Though I already kind of excel in this class, I saw this particular assignment to be an opportunity to really express myself, and basically just do me. My teacher always said that my work always seemed to have a kind of Surreal feeling to it, and that once we got on to this subject, she predicted I would likely feel at home per say.

She was right. This assignment felt so free: to create a piece that manifests a state of dreaming. Seeing as most of my work hardly ever has logical structure and is basically me just putting down whatever image pops up in my head that day.

However, this time was a little different. I listened to “Hold My Liquor” on repeat while painting the background. I got a rush of reminiscence and realization of the disorder and misery in my life, and this is essentially what drove the color choice for the background. I originally intended it for it to be a similar pattern with the same colors, but with a much brighter tone. However my emotions during my meditation caused me to aim more towards the darker and even less ordered background.

I wanted it to contrast with the sun and set up a bit of irony, almost intent on having it represent my plight in so many different ways, one being my constant chase of material things and short term goals which only turn to be distractions to attempt to fill the gaps in my soul. I often think I want some new videogame or electronic device or just money in general, but often times if I do manage to obtain one of these things, the luster fades rather quickly and I’m stuck realizing that it’s not this material that I truly long for, but rather more intangible things from people that used to be in my life, or from myself.

The Process

The painting took 2 days to finish. I started with the head in the center, using color pencils to draw an outline of the face in order to prevent paint from leaking onto the face which I planned on coloring lightly (a trick I learned in elementary school: watercolor won’t move over wax). Next I colored in the skin by using a combination of blues and purples, lightly scratching thin lines. Next was the sun, also color pencil; orange, dandelion yellow, and brown.

I followed by beginning the painting process using a combination of temporal blue paint and acrylic blue-green paint, then (tried to) made light strokes of black temporal in order to give the water some rhythm.

Next I began the background, using temporal green and red, and acrylic blue-green once again. I kept the brush wet and did not clean in between colors, which is how I accomplished the dark and deep feel to it. I’m sure there’s a word for that, but I don’t remember it.

Finally I finished up by using temporal white to create the foam, color-patching to blend (a technique that stuck with me after studying Van Gogh the previous term).

After doing so, I painted my name in the bottom right corner (as I always do), though it got cropped out in this photo.

As for the title, I rarely title my visual art, so the title is mainly a bunch of random words; don’t try to look to deeply into it lol ;–).

Darkness is my only fit

Prayer by Mary Gold (Ft. Curren$y)

A reference to the fact that Mary Gold is an active nudist

Being a nudist, her dark skin (“darkness”) is her only clothing, unless her partner is performing oral sex on her.

Prayer by Mary Gold (Ft. Curren$y)

Because of how down she is, Spitta is willing to make her his main bitch and spend money on her. However, what makes Spitta different from the “Captain Save Em’s” out there, is the fact that despite how down she is, and how willing he is to drop the cash, Spitta still does not trust her.

Knowing better than to trust a bitch, even though she was with him back when he began hustling

If you're God, then I'm Mary Prayer by Mary Gold (Ft. Curren$y)

Triple entendre here:

  • By using her stage name, this line implies egoism in stating that she, herself, is above God.

  • This could also tie in with the previous lines which refers to a BDSM scenario.

  • Could also stress her importance, or show submission of importance(which would tie in with the last line) with a reference to the Virgin Mary) who, in the Christian bible, gave birth to Jesus Christ(who can be interpreted as a living manifestation of God).

If I'm earth, you must be king Prayer by Mary Gold (Ft. Curren$y)

Double entendre here:

  • Her being earth and the (presumed) male being king ties with the last line describing an act of BDSM. Although, this line would convey a role reversal.

  • Possible reference to the Nation of Gods and Earths a belief group believing that black males represent Allah and black females represent mother Earth or nature.
