Kendrick’s mother was a sitter for others, and she also sold Section 8 vouchers (food stamps) as a source of income.

Section 8 of the Housing Act of 1937 (42 U.S.C. § 1437f), often simply known as Section 8, authorizes the payment of rental housing assistance to private landlords on behalf of approximately 3.1 million low-income households. It operates through several programs, the largest of which, the Housing Choice Voucher program, pays a large portion of the rents and utilities of about 2.1 million households. Kendrick’s family was one of these households that required aide.

In a 2012 interview with LA Leakers, Kendrick discussed the reason that he doesn’t smoke. The first time he smoked weed, someone laced the joint with cocaine—which, in this case, is referred to as “angel dust,” rather than referring to PCP.

Furthermore, this line touches on the secret meaning behind the album title:

made me an angel on angel dust.

My
Angels
on
Angel
Dust

m.A.A.d

The connection between angels and the afterlife is also important here, considering the line in the last verse about Compton making him a “human sacrifice.” Being an angel could infer having a life after experiencing a sort of ‘social death’ in the hood. Additionally, this may be a reference to the fact that Compton is in Los Angeles.

Kendrick has mentioned in interviews that there are other meanings for the acronym, including: “My Angry Adolescence Divided.”

Compton, Compton, ain’t no city quite like mine

Cali love, Kendrick’s home – originally given the spelling treatment by his mentor Dre back in 92:

But I’m never off, always on to the break of dawn / C-O-M-P-T-O-N and the city they call Long Beach

In addition, Kendrick’s ‘win/ball/defeat’ wording is a continuation of the football reference ‘audible’ from the previous line; moreover, the spelling with dashes between the letters of the word ‘Compton’ mimics the stacatto bark of a quarterback changing his play call.

Frank Ocean on religion:

i was raised christian. only had a few friends from different religions growing up. these days i’ve got family from agnostic to islam. my grandmother was pentecostal evangelical. she brought much of that fire and brimstone back to her household. my uncle tony said the other kids teased him and his siblings, called them “holyrollers”. so as you may or may not expect, my mother was, and still is, less than imposing when it comes to a particular system of belief. i was a practicing catholic for a short time. me and moms started going to separate churches when i was like 13. i never sang or played in the church though, unfortunately. i remember being kind of intimidated by the idea of it actually. church was the hood julliard to me. all the coldest musicians came out of there. the lady in the video…summa cum laude.

The Atari 2600 was released in 1977 and ushered a shift in video games from arcades to homes. When compared with modern gaming consoles, it is extremely outdated.

Additionally, “Sorry” could be a connotative reference to the board game

The line is comparable to one in Cee-Lo Green’s August 2010 hit, “Fuck You,” although Kendrick plays on the use of the word “game"—meaning the ability to flirt or seduce.

Alludes to the fact that this girl lives her life as if everyday counts.

“Live not one’s life as though one had a thousand years, but live each day as the last.” – Marcus Aurelius

Essentially a YOLO reference.

Or even more appropriate to the Roman Emperor’s words and Kendrick Lamar is the Latin maxim, “carpe diem” which means “seize the day.” While YOLO can be used to vaguely justify acts, no matter what the consequence; in essence “seizing the day” can be an encouragement to live life the best way you can. Lamar’s original statement, when looked at this way, can be more connected to the next verse poetic justice, which is a just end to your actions good or bad.

The song itself seems to be an ode to Sherane asking for her trust and love.

But given Kendrick is now on a larger stage, “you” may very well refer to his audience. After all, Kendrick’s mom later encourages him to “tell [his] story for the little black and brown kids of Compton”.
