Pete Rock wanted to produce a beat that reflected his emotions toward the death of his close friend “Trouble T.Roy” Dixon. Writing the lyrics and making the instrumental for the tribute song helped them grieve. The resultant beat not only captures the essence of their friendship, but speaks to anyone who has lost someone close to them.

The beat features a sampled of Tom Scott’s “Today.” Its saxophone melody is melancholy and its vocal harmonies are haunting. They have a foggy, almost far-away feel to them, tied together with a simple hip-hop drum break that grounds the whole sound. Pete Rock speaks briefly on producing the beat here:

André hopes that he doesn’t end up like the group that let him down. He wants to be remembered in a positive light even when he decides to call it quit, instead of hanging around too long and tarnishing his legacy. Seeing as the duo has yet to put out a bad album and people are still losing their shit over the news that OutKast will be reuniting at Coachella 20 years after they first came up on the scene, I think it’s safe to say he got his wish.

“Up shit’s creek without a paddle” is a phrase that is used to describe a very difficult situation that is almost impossible to get out of. André imagines this is how he would feel if he ever fell off and had to work his way back up to the top. The last thing André wants to hear as his career winds down is that OutKast’s latest (last) effort is “weak.”

Quid, however in its plural form is still Quid and not Quids.

Big Boi already knows what kind of chick she is. The Atlanta rapper may also be including some wordplay here on “but game” which could double “butt game”, or an appreciation of the appearance of her large buttocks, the previously mentioned “hottie’s body”.

No matter what, the consequences of your actions catch up with you, and sometimes, you can’t just run away.

The line “couldn’t abort that case” suggests that maybe the character Big Boi is talking to aborted their child because they were running from that responsibility, effectively meaning “You couldn’t run away from this problem.”
