Just to clear up any misinformation about when this track was written, here is an interview with the producer of the track, Chris Winston:

Canns – So firstly, can you confirm to everyone when you actually produced the track ‘Deja Vu’? A lot of people actually thought that was an ‘Illmatic’ outtake, whilst others suggested it came a bit later as Nas used the same lyrics on ‘Verbal Intercourse’?

Chris Winston – Yes I produced Deja Vu. It was well after Illmatic when Nas started working on It Was Written. He wrote the lyrics to Deja Vu with me then ended up using the 1st Verse on Raekwon’s joint."

Notice the hitch in Matthew’s voice when he says this – it’s an indication that he’s finally lost it for good.

Much like how Stan quoted Eminem right before he killed himself and his girlfriend, Matthew is quoting an older Em line off of a track called Desperados.

Chauvinist pig, drove in this big Lincoln
Till it went over the bridge"

“Chauvinist pig” also sounds like “shove in this pig” (which is what Matthew plans to do).

This is also a reference to a Frank Ocean line off of “Swim Good”, where Frank talks about what he can fit in the trunk of his Lincoln. Considering Matthew’s apparent fascination with Frank that becomes clear in the next line, it makes the reference more likely.

That’s a pretty big trunk on my Lincoln car, ain’t it?
Big enough to take these broken hearts and put ‘em in it"

Wordplay: massacre and mass occur. Watching a Catholic church service take place is “witnessing a mass occur

Eminem, after two verses of switching up flows that are common in the industry and completely owning each one, only now decides it’s alright to declare that these dudes are being slaughtered.

The church/mass references fit with the religious theme of being a rap god. So listening to this song is like attending mass and worshiping the Rap God.

Gatorade is an American sports-themed beverage and food manufacturer, best known for their signature line of sports drinks.

With this lyric, Yung Lean is likely referring to the drug “codeine” also known as “lean”.
Promethazine with codeine syrup is used to treat coughs in medicine but when mixed with soda, or a Gatorade sports drink to make the taste nicer, the syrup is abused and used recreationally.

In this instance, “Lemonade” is a strain of cannabis, with the most common sub-strains being Pink Lemonade or Electric Lemonade.

It gets it’s name from the supposed sour lemon taste but Lean may just be using the phrase “smoking lemonade” to mean “smoking on sour”.

Eminem’s putting on his own spin on “Hush, Little Baby”, a traditional lullaby:

Hush little baby, don’t say a word,
Papa’s gonna buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird won’t sing,
Papa’s gonna buy you a diamond ring.
And if that diamond ring turns to brass,
Papa’s gonna buy you a looking glass.
