The story of Macklemore’s short stint with a fake ID, including a “rant” about bouncers that is mostly just a joke. Not a very serious song, but the moral of the story is:
“Never take an emcee’s Fake ID”

In 2000, Gore actually won the popular vote by about 500,000, but the Supreme Court’s controversial role in the Florida recounts had a big impact on the outcome of the election. Mack points out that the Supreme Court might have been biased since as president, George H.W. Bush had nominated two Supreme Court justices and G.H.W.’s buddy Ronald Reagan had nominated 4 more, making 6 of the 9 justices G.H.W.’s “friends”.

The George W. Bush vs. Al Gore election was one of the most controversial ever. But Macklemore implies that even people who legitimately voted for Bush in 2000 couldn’t have predicted how “evil” he turned out to be. This makes the third line of the hook sort of a double entendre , since “a president that y'all didn’t vote fo'” could refer to Gore winning the popular vote in the 2000 election or to Bush voters not meaning to vote for the “evil” president that Bush actually became.

Kweli has described the song as a tribute to “Born To Roll” by Masta Ace.
