It’s an undeniable trend that a lot of black kids in America grow up with out a father in the home, around 40% From this trend, there is a stereotype that all black kids don’t have dads, so this kid thinks that Gambino isn’t “really black” because of that. What makes matters worse, is that this causes some black kids to feel that they aren’t “really black” themselves because they have a father, which is just fucked up.

This line is similar in setting and concept to a line in CG’s “I’m On It”:

Walking ‘round NYU, Looking for a dollar Too proud to ask my friends or my struggling father
So I skate around the city for a couple hours
Dreaming up a day that I could say this world is ours

Typical day in the life of a broke college kid trying to follow his dreams.

There is a famous falafel shop, Mamoun’s, a staple of NYU, where Gambino studied.. The falafel sandwiches are $3.50, which is cheap.

  • Childish Gambino’s initials are CG, which also is an acronym for “Computer Generated”, like the images in a lot of modern movies. It’s an oxymoron to juxtapose the idea of something being “computer generated”, but also authentic.

  • Also, a lot of his earlier work was done using his laptop, and most music today is produced digitally.

  • “Real” could also be a play on the word “reel” referring to film reel used in movies before computer generated imaging became popular (hence, what he’s doing isn’t new, he’s always been doing it).

  • The name Childish Gambino was generated by computer – with the Wu Tang Name Generator. Therefore “so computer generated childish gambino name but the rapper stay real” which means it doesnt matter for him how his name was created he don’t care what people thinks about that because he stays real he put himself in the music

Childish Gambino made 3 “points” in the previous line. Those being that he’s fly, ill, and running shit. In (American) football, you score 3 points by kicking a field goal.

“The kick is up, It’s Good!”

This may also be a subtle reference to his Community character Troy, who was a star quarterback in high school.

This black card line is also referencing the n-word line above it. He’s saying he should buy a bunch of ‘n-words,’ use them to gain street cred, and keep buying them/street cred until the Black card’s maxed out.

Not to be confused with the other black card…

Also It’s a double meaning that he will “buy” and then “put it on my black card”, meaning a credit card linking to a bank account with a lot of money. He will use his street cred until his card is maxed out. For those of you who don’t know, it takes a lot to max out a black card.
Another part of the double meaning is the line above references “N-word” and then he says “black card”, i.e. pulling the race card.

“Cred” is of course short for “credit,” continuing with the credit card metaphor.

Childish Gambino grew up being called “white” for not acting or behaving in ways that correspond with stereotypes of blackness. This ties into the previous line about “well spoken token” as being “well spoken” is one of the characteristics that he exhibits that is associated with “white” behavior. Here, he is playing off of that derision by calling himself a “white” rapper who can say nigga.

Even Eminem wouldn’t try that shit (anymore).

The cross is one of the major symbols for Christianity and also a gold cross is a popular piece of jewelry among most rappers. The word for an unsuccessful stunt in many action sports is to “bail” which is a homonym for “Bale”. As a non-stereotypical rapper, CG doesn’t wear a gold cross as a piece jewelry. It should also be noted that CG was raised a Jehovah’s witness and therefore would not be allowed to wear a gold cross as a piece of jewelry.

Also a pun on the actor Christian Bale’s name. Christian played Jesus of Nazareth in the movie Mary, Mother of Jesus.

This is a reference to “Sid and Nancy” a biopic about Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungeon. Sid is a talented musician who is introduced to heroin by Nancy. The result of their destructive relationship is both of their deaths. Nancy is killed by Sid, and Sid dies of a heroin overdose.

Now, go back through that explanation and replace “Sid” with “Childish Gambino”, and “Nancy” with “Hip-Hop”. Now you can see that CG plans on destroying “Hip-Hop” (In its largely intellectually void and static form it is today), but this crusade is also going to result in his death. This is consistent with a lot of CG’s earlier lyrics about dying early and/or suicide.

Long story short, Gambino is here to kill the game

This line refers to how Donald Glover is still underrated and derided as a rapper, but is using that derision to keep putting out quality music that just gets better and better with each incarnation of his work.

It’s also a good example of a poetic/musical device called “word painting”, the choice of words matches the tonality of the music or inflection at that particular time.

Also an oxymoron.
Also “up the ante” is a poker reference. He’s saying people knock what he’s doing so instead of folding he raises the stakes.

He’s saying I know you can’t stand me because your little cousin plays my music so often.

“Sorry for who followed me” refers to two things. First, It’s hard to follow his set on stage. If he performs first and you’re next in line, you might as well not even try. Second, whichever guy gets with the girl he just got with will be in a bad place because of Gambino’s superior fucking skills and his huge dick.

This could also be a reference to his first twitter account @DonGlover. He’s stated in interviews that he would get all kinds of messages and tweets at him making penis jokes because Don Glover looks like Dong Lover.
